Girls Dresses â Then and Now
Once upon a time girls loved to look like little princesses or fairies. Their entire dress focus was the Cinderella like pinafore or the princess with a pastel shaded gauzy will o’ the wisp ensemble. The everyday dress was cotton with checks or stripes with a large bow at the back complete with a charming cap set on fair and dark heads (curls preferred but optional) and a white apron to prevent dust or grime. The princess look was good for special occasions such as birthdays or weddings – a plethora of colours available ranging from gentle white to peach, lilac, baby pink and sky blue. Hats and shoes to match. Many dresses came with matching tiaras or ribbons to be threaded through aforementioned curls. So many loving mothers, aunts and grandmas have oohed and aahed at their baby princesses!
Zip back to current day. It’s hard enough for my daughter and me to agree on school/ everyday clothes, special occasions resemble a tug of war. I find opinions on suitability are as diverse as the number of languages on the earth. Suddenly, girls rarely seem to wear dresses any more. The ones who do are either “mum’s darling†or “just not with itâ€! Mostly girls tend to wear jeans (torn for special effect) and tops. Many girls also wear tops with short skirts and leggings. A denim jacket is also necessary. The ensemble is considered ideal if nothing matches with anything. The skirt seems to always have a leather or chunky belt to complete the (shudder) effect. I daresay it suits them but I still wish for the days when girls were girls and wore charming dresses instead.
